Coffee Bars are constantly popping up around KL, but it is still difficult to find a great coffee. Here are two coffee bars that take the art of coffee making seriously. You won’t be disappointed.
Artisan Coffee Bar, KL
A bar that takes their coffee seriously. In pride of place, above the coffee machines and cake stands, hangs an intricate guide to your perfect coffee, scrawled across a wooden-framed blackboard. Milky of black? Subtle or punchy? Perhaps a shot of flavoured syrup or a touch of chocolate?
Not a coffee person, why not go for tea? Would you like that iced or steaming hot? Loose-leaf or caffeine-free? The staff here will identify your the perfect drink. The cappuccinos are smooth and creamy. No need for sugar, the coffee is balanced and mellow; not at all bitter.
Under the glow of the moka and caffatiere light-bulbs, I sipped on my Red latte, a milky blend of antioxidant-rich Roobios tea and fresh milk, topped with a perfect foam cap. All drinks are served at optimum drinking temperature, unless requested extra-hot.
The flat white is a quality drink, with a stuff foam cap, stained with a swirl and smokey-rich coffee beneath.
Alongside my red tea, I had myself a red cake, Artisan Coffee’s superbly moist Red Velvet cake; three layers of melt-in-the-mouth, burgundy-red-coloured chocolate sponge, unified with sweet white chocolate ganache. However, be warned: this is an extremely sweet cake.. far too sweet even for me (and I have been known to go through a jar of honey in one sitting).
Sit back on their comfortable sofas or prop yourself on a bar stool and relax to the likes of The Beatles, Coldplay, Dido and Sinatra. The perfect spot for your morning caffeine-fix or a post-work chill-out.

Whisk, Outpost Espresso Bar & Bake Shop, KL
A line-up of majestic-looking bakes sheltered under large glass cloches stands across the wooden sideboard of this ‘Paris chic’ coffee bar, that is hidden away in the old wing of 1Utama mall. It’s a truly tantalising sight and I was spoilt for choice. The Red Velvet and Granny’s Cake are Whisk’s top sellers and their blacker than black Chocolate cake brings back memories of watching Bruce Bogtrotter devour ‘Cookie’s’ giant chocolate cake in Mathilda.
To me, nothing screams “eat me” more than the winning combination of banana and peanut. To my delight, towering tall at the back of the display was Whisk’s banana-pecan cake. Endearingly named Bub’s Cake, it features layers of peanut butter cream and cream cheese frosting. The three bouncy layers of sponge had a light crumb and a delicate banana flavour that was not overpowered by the creamy peanut filling. The pecans added a caramel-nuttiness, while the cream cheese frosting gave a slight ‘tang’ to balance out the sweetness. Pair it with a frothy flat white and you’ve got a winning combination.
Now to the coffee. Whisk uses La Marzocco coffee machines from Italy for tis coffee. The cafe is famed for its indulgently good mochachino with Nutella. And what a combo it is. Thick, chocolately Nutella coats the inside of the glass, which is then filled with steaming coffee. The Nutella melts into the rich, slightly bitter coffee-blissful! Cold-brew coffee is a speciality here-different roasts are available throughout the month, so you’ll never get tired of the same old coffee. We loved the Yellowbird Seasonal Blend, served without milk, describes as having a mixed berries aroma, candied almond notes and a cohesive pairing of milk chocolate and raspberries.
If you are on-the-go, order your coffee from their cute ‘coffee-to-go’ window. Not a coffee fan? Belvoir juices and lemonades are also available.
