After a day at the beach in Cagnes sur Mer, I often head to Carré Bleu for dinner. The food is exquisite and the view of the sun setting over the sea, unbeatable. Carré Bleu reaps the benefits of being on the seafront, serving a daily catch of seafood alongside traditional french cuisine and house-made desserts.
Pasta dishes boast flavours of the Mediterranean, such as this roasted vegetable, sun-dried tomato, parsley and goats’ cheese penne. The pasta was cooked al dente, giving a nice bite to contrast the soft roasted peppers, courgette and aubergine. The goats’ cheese gave creaminess and a hint of pungent flavour, while the herbs finished the dish with a sprinkling of freshness. Perfectly composed simplicity.
The fresh fish is cooked with respect at Carré Bleu. The flavours speak for themselves – no heavy sauces or overwhelming seasoning. The bamboo medley of cod, rouget, salmon and scallops was served in the bamboo steamed – a nice touch. Fresh greens, a smooth butternut puree and a light cream sauce complemented the flavours of the fish. The dish needed nothing more.
Desserts were delectable. I especially enjoyed the crème brûlée. Its sugar crust cracked into glass-like shards and was delicate and fine (many a crème brûlée has left me with thick caramel stuck in my teeth!)
The Toblerone mousse was served in a cute jar and was light and nutty with nuggets of almond nougat.
After the meal, my friend and I relaxed with a glass of wine while watching the sun sink into the waves. Pure bliss.
